About NorseStory Publishing

Between Myth
and Historical Tradition.

Norse mythology continues to fascinate. NorseStory looks beyond familiar stories to their sources, historical context and what the surviving evidence actually tells us.

Why NorseStory

Historical Traditions
Need Context.

Not every familiar interpretation or claim is supported by historical evidence. NorseStory begins by asking what the sources can actually establish.

Vikings, runes and Norse symbols are everywhere today.

The boundaries between historical evidence, popular culture and modern interpretations are often blurred. Many ideas now presented as distinctly “Norse” have far less straightforward histories than they appear to.

NorseStory does not treat Norse mythology and culture as a closed system of timeless, fixed meanings. The surviving traditions are fragmentary, complex and shaped by different periods. They need to be read, compared and understood within their historical contexts.

The aim is not to diminish the fascination of mythology. Distinguishing what the sources preserve, what scholars can reasonably infer and what later generations added makes these traditions more rewarding to explore.

The NorseStory Approach

Read the Sources. Understand the Context. Distinguish Interpretations.

Centuries may separate a historical source from a modern claim. Making that distance visible is central to NorseStory’s work.

01

Identify What the Evidence Supports

A historical claim does not become true simply because it is widely repeated. Where sources support a statement, NorseStory explains the evidence. Where they do not, speculation remains speculation.

02

Make Interpretations Clear

Runes, symbols, rituals and mythological motifs have complex histories of transmission. Modern interpretations are part of their later reception, but they do not automatically reflect historical meanings.

03

Make Knowledge Accessible

Careful source criticism need not be dry. NorseStory combines historical analysis with clear language and engaging presentation, inviting readers to explore the evidence further.

About the Founder

Alexander Ellmer

Historian, researcher and author specialising in Norse mythology and Scandinavian cultural history.

Through NorseStory, Alexander Ellmer works to present Norse subjects with historical care, nuance and clarity. His research examines mythology, runes, rituals, symbols and cultural traditions, paying close attention to the distinction between historical evidence and modern interpretation.

His approach is not to invent new systems of interpretation, but to examine existing assumptions critically. Where did a claim originate? How old is it? What do the sources say, and what do they leave unanswered?

This work informs the publisher’s books, its growing research archive and its illustrated learning cards. Each offers a different way to preserve and communicate knowledge about the North while respecting the limits of the surviving evidence.

NorseStory Publishing

Knowledge Worth Exploring Further.

NorseStory Publishing focuses on Norse mythology and Scandinavian cultural history. Gods and myths, runes and symbols, rituals and festivals, animals and plants, and everyday life in the Viking Age are examined as parts of broader historical and cultural contexts.

The book series brings this knowledge together in print. The research archive explores individual questions in depth, while the illustrated learning cards provide concise introductions. Together, they offer a growing route into a history that deserves more than clichés and easy answers.

Knowledge is not a destination. It is a path we follow, step by step, mindful of what was, what is and what may yet be.
